Baku City Circuit, Azerbaijan circuit details

The Baku track is a mixture of a very fast straight and a a tight twisty street circuit. So you need a car that works on the high speeds of Monza and the slow corners of Monaco plus a driver that can keep the car away from the barriers. The track has 20 corners, with full throttle for 63% of the lap and top speeds of over 200mph. This is the second longest F1 track.

Race winner: Oscar Piastri McLaren
Charles Leclerc took pole ahead of Oscar Piastri. Piastri took the lead on lap 20 and managed to defend his lead from Leclerc all the way to the finish. Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz were fighting for third and crash on the penultimate lap giving third place to George Russell. Lando Norris started 15th worked his way up to finish 4th.

2023

Race winner: Sergio Perez Red Bull
Sergio Perez took pole position and won both the sprint race and the full race. The Red Bull's were the class of the field with Max Verstappen loosing out after a coming together with George Russell in the Sprint and dropping to second after a safety car in the main race. Charles Leclerc scored Ferrari's first podium of the season and Fernando Alonso continued his strong start to the season finishing 4th in the main race.

2022

Race winner: Max Verstappen Red Bull
Charles Leclerc took pole position but both he and Carlos Sainz Jr in the other Ferrari both retired with mechanical problems leaving Max Verstappen to take the win ahead of team mate Sergio Perez, followed by the two Mercedes of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.

2021

Race winner: Sergio Perez Red Bull
Charles Leclerc took pole position in an eventful qualifying that involved 4 red flags due to accidents. Max Verstappen was comfortably leading the race when with 4 laps left a tyre failure at 200mph caused him to crash and the race stopped. When it restarted Lewis Hamilton locked up his brakes, giving the win to Sergio Perez, who had been running consistently in second place. Sebastian Vettel had a good race, finishing second giving Aston Martin their first podium finish. Lance Stroll also had a similar tyre failure to Max Verstappen.

2019

Race winner: Valtteri Bottas Mercedes
Valtteri Bottas won from pole position ahead of team mate Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel in a Ferrari. The race is notable for a strange incident between Daniil Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo that involved Daniel Ricciardo reversing into Daniil Kvyat.

2018

Race winner: Lewis Hamilton Mercedes
The 2018 race brought excitement back to F1. Sebastian Vettel led from pole position and continued after a first lap safety car. The race changed completely when late on the two Red Bulls of Ricciardo and Verstappen crashed into each other and took each other out of the race. The subsequent safety car led to a set of pit stops that brought Valtteri Bottas out in the lead. At the restart Vettel Bottas went to deep into a corner and dropped back and then Bottas had a puncture, which handed the race win to Lewis Hamilton.

2017

Race winner: Daniel Ricciardo Red Bull
This was the first Azerbaijan GP as the previous race was run as the European GP. The race had accidents, safety cars and a red flag. In the end Daniel Ricciardo won for Red Bull ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Lance Stroll for Williams. The was Lance Stroll's first podium finish.

2016

Race winner: Nico Rosberg Mercedes
This was the first race run on the circuit and was run as the European GP. Nico Rosberg won from pole position ahead of Sebastian Vettel in a Ferrari and Sergio Perez in his Force India.
